Yesterday I walked out past the barber and the firehouse,
The day was young and yawning, like a rumbling deep beneath the block.
I heard my footsteps echo and I saw my breath in store front glass,
But every face I saw was solid rock.

Shiver in winter and I sweat in summer heat
I feel the ground beneath my feet.

(The) sun was high and vulgar when I came upon the hardware store,
The signs were terse and angry, but I choked back on my fear and pride,
I got some odds and ends I needed, copied my apartment keys,
Someday I might just let someone inside.

And when the day grows sharp and angry,
I scream to see if I can make someone react.
I don’t know why I still feel so compelled to try,
I guess I kinda wanna feel like I still got a part to play, like I got my say, like I’ve got.
